Playing Bach on the Keyboard: A Practical Guide

Playing Bach on the Keyboard: A Practical Guide

$193.26

In this concise and accessible volume, a noted keyboard artist and Bach specialist takes a fresh look at the performance of J. S. Bach’s keyboard music. Addressing the nonspecialist player, Richard Troeger presents a wide range of historical information and discusses its musical applications. The author shares accounts of the musical styles Bach employed and the instruments he knew. In direct and pragmatic terms, he clarifies the importance of notational and style details as guides to the composer’s intentions, particularly emphasizing changes in notational norms between Bach’s time and the present. Troeger offers core information on dynamics, articulation, tempo, rhythm, ornamentation and accompaniment. He considers controversial issues as well, establishing the importance of the clavichord in Bach’s milieu and examining the link between baroque music and rhetoric – a dramatic relationship that can bring great vitality to performance.

 12 Bar Blues Bible

12 Bar Blues Bible

$22.95

12 Bar Blues Bible by Andrew D. Gordon Due to the overwhelming demand of my book “100 Ultimate Blues Riffs”, I decided to author another book solely on blues piano/keyboard playing. Most Blues tunes are made up of a 12 bar progression and I thought that a book that show the various types and styles of 12 bar blues progressions would be useful to musicians and students. The book includes over 50 examples that cover a range of styles, (blues, jazz-blues, minor-blues, funky-blues, country-blues, rock-blues, latin-blues, gospel-blues), tempos, rhythms and key signatures. There is a brief description, followed by each of the examples perfectly notated, along with the chord symbols. The latter part of the book contains a chapter on the “Basics Of Blues Improvisation” for anyone who is just starting out in the world of Improvising using the Blues as a starting point. At the end of the CD there are seven jam – along tracks, each about three minutes in length so that you may try out examples in the book or your own improvisational ideas along with a rhythm section of organ, bass and drums.

The band is composed of Paul Wolinski, Joe Shrewsbury, Rob Jones and Simon Wright. The band has thus far released three albums through Monotreme Records: The Fall of Math , One Time for All Time , The Destruction of Small Ideas , and one, We Were Exploding Anyway , through Hassle Records, the label to which they recently signed. Initially, the band interspersed heavy, progressive, guitar-driven instrumental sections with live drums and off-beat sampled drums akin to those of Aphex Twin , although since their second album they have developed their work to include keyboard parts. History Formation and Line-up The band was originally formed in 2001 as a three-piece, consisting of Joe Shrewsbury, Paul Wolinski, and Iain Armstrong. The lineup of the band has changed somewhat since its initial formation with Feedle (Graham Clarke), a fellow member of the Tefosav collective, joining in March 2003, playing a part in writing the band’s first single from The Fall of Math , “Retreat! Grateful Dead concert at Kezar Stadium on 23 Mar 75

Grateful Dead concert at Kezar Stadium on 23 Mar 75

$9.98

Although short by normal standards, this is one of the most extraordinary sets of the Grateful Dead’s entire career. This unexpected set was a big surprise, not only for its highly unusual musical content, but simply for the fact that the Grateful Dead performed. It’s all ancient history now, but in October of 1974, the Dead officially retired from live performance, after filming the Winterland run that would comprise The Grateful Dead Movie. Few expected to ever see them perform live as a band again, so when they showed up in full, with keyboardists Merl Saunders and Ned Lagin in tow, as well as former drummer Mickey Hart, it was a major cause for celebration. The Dead, who ended up only playing four shows in 1975, could have easily satisfied the Bay Area crowd, both Deadheads and others, with a collection of their straight-ahead classic rock songs. Instead they pulled a truly punk move before the punks were even around by playing a lyric-less, melody-evasive jam that draws on material from their 1975 Blues for Allah album. The set showcases the Grateful Dead’s instrumental prowess, especially their mid 70s penchant for jazz-inspired jams. Alternating between intriguing free-jazz abstractions and deep jazz-funk grooves, the Blues for Allah suite surprisingly avoids gratuitous noodling; which is quite a feat considering the double guitar and drums attack and the triple keyboard onslaught. Garcia’s sharp, incisive guitar runs lead the instrumental wolf pack with the two electronic pianos providing complementing lines just beneath the surface. Lesh’s bass and Kreutzmann’s drums provide the backbone of the grooves while Saunders’s organ, often low and drone-like in the mix, quietly ties everything together. The “Johnny B. Goode” closer, coming in just under four minutes, wraps up the set with a rock n’ roll burner. The band’s clever one-two punch is a hit with the audience and they roar loudly after each song. Fans of the Grateful Dead will appreciate this show as

Excerpt: Sadist is a progressive death metal band from Genoa, Italy, founded in 1991. The band split up in 2000 after releasing their Lego album, but reunited in 2005 and released their self-titled album in 2007. Their compositions involve a heavy usage of guitar solos and keyboard solos, with progressive, jazz and some Eastern influences. Although Sadist are a death metal outfit, the album Lego is a nu metal album with a thrash metal background. Sadist was formed in 1991 when Tommy (guitar, keyboards) and Peso (drums) started auditioning for musicians to complete their lineup. A few weeks after, the auditions, Andy (bass) and Fabio (vocals) joined. While playing locally with original content from their demo, they caught the attention of the indie label Obscure Plasma Records. Their demo was released as Black Screams EP in September 1991, and sold 2500 copies worldwide. The EP was later released in 1992 by American indie label Wild Rag Records in a three-track version. The band toured Italy and France until Fabio left the band, which forced Andy to play bass as well as sing. Shortly afterward, the band plays a show in Lisbon and were well received by audience and local media. The band then obtains a record deal with Nosferatu Records for a two-album contract and releases Above the Light in 1993. Then, Andy leaves the band, and is replaced by bassist Chicco and a new singer, Zanna. In late 1993, the band records a video for the song “Sometimes They Come Back” from the Above the Light album and tour France and the Netherlands. In early 1994, Sadist supports Carcass during the Italian shows for their “Heartwork” tour; a few months later they support Samael in France. While on tour, the band works on songs for the new album and in May 1995 enters Rhythm… More:

Jimmy Smith Trio concert at Newport Jazz Festival on 05 Jul 64

The undisputed heavyweight champion of the Hammond B-3 organ, Jimmy Smith revolutionized the unwieldy instrument by bridging the gap between bebop and blues with his earthy virtuosity. Though he wasn’t the first to play organ in a jazz context (Fats Waller, Milt Buckner and Wild Bill Davis had been there before), Smith took the B-3 to places that it had never been before. With Quentin Warren on guitar and William (Billy) Hart on drums, Smith opens his July 5th set at the 1964 Newport Jazz Festival with the bluesy “Sonnymoon for Two,” a quintessential jamming vehicle composed by tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins. Coming out of the familiar head, guitarist Warren offers a few swinging chorus on guitar before Smith enters with some blues statements on the B-3, gradually building his solo to stratospheric heights while anchoring the tune with his grooving foot pedal bass lines. Hart’s playing is relaxed, loose and syncopated here, perfectly complementing Smith’s incendiary keyboard work. By the halfway point of this nearly 15-minute marathon, it would seem that the organist might exhaust his supply of ideas, but he keeps blazing on with an audacious combination of chops, endurance and soul that leaves the audience stunned. His dynamic solo goes on for a full 10 minutes on this opening number without ever losing energy or excitement. From that stratospheric, swinging opener, the Smith trio heads into more earthbound terrain with a rendition of Ray Charles’ funky gospel-fueled hit from 1959, “I Got a Woman.” They follow with a lush version of “Moonlight in Vermont,” a huge hit in 1953 for guitarist Johnny Smith (with Stan Getz on tenor). Guitarist Warren carries this appealing melody while Smith lays a velvety cushion beneath his deliberate lines and drummer Hart underscores the proceedings with gently swinging brushwork. Smith does offer yet another dazzling keyboard solo here, but it’s well within the context of the lyrical offering. The bluesy shuffle number “The Sermo

Victor Wooten is one of the most celebrated electric bassists of all time. His secret seems to lie in doing his own thing, breaking boundaries and defying categorization along the way. Chip Stern wrote in Musician Magazine that Wooten is proof that all men are not created equal. To this Wooten says, A lot of guys who have been around for a long time are shocked when they see some of the things I’m doing. Fortunately, they like it. Live In America is the first time that Wooten’s explosive live show has been captured on cd. The two disc set was recorded on tour over the past four years and features Wooten’s bandmates Regi Wooten (guitar), Joseph Wooten (keyboard), JD Blair (drums) and vocalist MC Divinity as well as surprise guests Marcus Miller and Bootsy Collins. Among the album’s 18 tracks are new versions of songs from Wooten’s three previous studio albums as well as several never before recorded songs including Nobody Knows My Name and Good People. Other stand out tracks include the gorgeous yet funky original Sacred Silence/Jam Man, an extended jam with fellow bass monster Marcus Miller on Miller Time, a spoken word band introduction offered by Bootsy Collins and Tappin And Thumpin and a rare recorded feature for guitar shredmaster and Wooten’s brother/teacher Regi Wooten. Above all, Live In America captures Wooten and company’s obvious joy in bringing music to a live audience night after night. Wooten explains, We are a very lucky group of people. We know this and we try not to take it for granted. Traveling around the world playing music is a wonderful thing and it produces many wonderful moments. Many of these moments are on this CD: my first time on stage with Marcus Miller, the intro that Bootsy recorded, especially for us, MC Divinity and Anthony Wellington on their first tours, and the night that I improvised a second verse on Good People because I had neglected

Oscar Peterson Trio concert at Newport Jazz Festival on 02 Jul 60

The Oscar Peterson Trio’s appearance at the 1960 Newport Jazz Festival coincided with a flood of Great American Songbook releases by the great pianist for the Verve label (produced by Norman Granz), covering classic material by such popular composers as Cole Porter, Jimmy McHugh, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers and Harry Warren. With longstanding collaborator Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums, Peterson unleashed his dazzling keyboard facility on his inspired Saturday night set at Freebody Park. They opening with a swinging take on “Softly as in a Morning’s Sunrise,” an elegant Sigmund Romberg-Oscar Hammerstein II tune from the 1928 operetta The New Moon which subsequently became a jazz standard, recorded by everyone from Artie Shaw and John Coltrane to George Benson and the Modern Jazz Quartet. They next jump into a sprightly uptempo romp through “Billy Boy,” the traditional American nursery rhyme popularized in the jazz world through separate 1958 recordings by Ahmad Jamal (At the Pershing Room) and Miles Davis (Milestones). Their effervescent, swinging chemistry and strong rapport are in evidence on this kinetic rendition, which is fueled by drummer Ed Thigpen’s deftness with both brushes and sticks. Brown also turns in a resounding bass solo here while Peterson engages in some fiery call-and-response exchanges with Thigpen before dropping in a quote from Milt Jackson’s “Spirit Feel” in the middle of his whirlwind solo. Next up is Ray Brown’s jaunty “Waltzing is Hip,” which is underscored by Thigpen’s elegant brushwork. It’s easy to see from this tune how the drummer got his nickname, “Mr. Taste.” Thigpen starts off the fiery “Cubano Chant” by playing on his drums with bare hands rather than sticks to affect a conga sound, engaging Peterson in some spirited call-and-response. Their crisp arrangement on the intricate head showcases the uncanny tightness that was a characteristic of the Peterson trio, then it’s off to the
