High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! 18 Wheeler were a Scottish rock band active in the early 1990s, consisting of Sean Jackson (vocals, guitar), David Keenan (guitar, vocals), Alan Hake (bass), and Neil Halliday (drums). Original bassist Chris “Pint Glass” Stewart left before any recordings were made, and was replaced by original drummer Hake. Keenan left in 1994 to start his own group, the Telstar Ponies and was replaced by guitarist Steven Haddow. In the same year, the band released their first album Twin Action on Creation Records and in 1995 they released their second album, Formanka. Their third album Year Zero, which saw them take a more experimental sample based approach, was released in early 1997. The remixed single “Stay” was given mainstream radio play and gave them their only UK Top 75 hit single (peaking at #59 in March). They were subsequently dropped by Creation during the recording of what was to be their fourth studio release. Although Alan Hake has stated that Creation Records allowed the band to keep the master tapes to this album, no plans to officially release it have materialised.

Excerpt: A Collection of Great Dance Songs item Pink Floyd compilations chronology item A Nice Pair (1973): A Collection of Great Dance Songs (1981): Works (1983) A Collection of Great Dance Songs is a compilation album by Pink Floyd released on 23 November 1981 on Harvest/EMI in the UK and Columbia Records in the United States. History The title is facetious, given that Pink Floyd is not known for making particularly danceable music. This is perhaps evidenced by the album art, which featured a photograph of ballroom dancers guyed to the ground so they cannot move. The Hipgnosis design team did the cover under the pseudonym TCP after falling out with Roger Waters a few years earlier. The inner sleeve had pictures of dancers in either a white (UK) or black (U.S.) background. The picture labels were a black background with blue lines and red sketch lined dancers on side one and reverse on side two. The album contains alternate mixes of “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” (which comprises parts 1 3, 5 and 7) and “Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)” (which combines the intro from the single mix with the album version which fades out during the “if you don’t eat your meat” ending). Also, the track “Money” was re-recorded as Capitol Records refused to let Columbia Records in the U.S. use the track. David Gilmour re-recorded the track himself playing all of the drums, guitars, keyboards, bass guitar and vocals and

Excerpt: Running in the Family was Level 42′s 1987 album and featured the UK hit singles: “Lessons in Love” (which reached No. 3 in April 1986), “Running in the Family” (No. 6 in February 1987), “To Be With You Again” (No. 10 in April ’87), “It’s Over” (No. 10, in September 1987) and “Children Say” (No. 22 at the end of 1987). All five singles peaked in the top 10 in the Netherlands, where the band were always popular. “Lessons in Love” peaked at #1 in Germany, South Africa, Switzerland and Denmark. This was the last Level 42 album of 1980′s to feature brothers Phil (drums) and Roland ‘Boon’ Gould (guitar), who had cited dissatisfaction with the musical direction of the band, and exhaustion as departure reasons. Later in ’87 The Platinum Edition of the album was issued. The CD and cassette replaced Lessons In love, Running In The Family and It’s Over with remixed versions, and added remixes of Something About You and World Machine from the previous album. On vinyl the remixes were featured on one 33rpm record which was shrink-wrapped to the standard edition of the Running In The Family album. Also in 1987 the group released the video collection “Family of Five” with the music videos of the five singles from Running in the Family. The release was only in the United Kingdom. Sagu has made a global name for himself as a leading Asian pioneer of fusion genre, his urbanized record production infuses the sounds and incorporates the elements, musical instruments, and hook lines of traditional bhangra with urban western sounds, primarily with a special emphasis on American hip hop. Indy Sagu was born and raised in Bradford, UK and began his professional musical career in his hometown in 1996. Sagus musical talents were essentially inherited from his familys musical background. From an early age his father taught him how to play various Indian instruments such as the harmonium, dholki, tumbi, and tabla and Indy then self taught himself to play the keyboards and drums. Having purchased his first set of turntables at age 16 he quickly made his debut in the Asian underground scene and became known throughout the UK as the pioneering DJ who infused traditional bhangra sounds into an urbanized street sound that was simply fun and unique. Indy spent the proceeding four years in the DJ circuit and while DJing at major Asian events he began focussing on his record production and keyboard skills. His musical record production talents lead to him being signed with Untouchables Records in 2000 and he then focussed on music production for other artists and began featuring on various compilation albums alongside American labels Warner Bros. Kay had a twin brother David, but he died a few weeks after birth. Kay has said that he still has a strong emotional connection with his brother. He was brought up by his Jewish mother Karen Kay, a cabaret singer, comedienne and impressionist who performed around the world, and stepfather James Royal. He did not meet his biological father, a man of Portuguese origin called Luís Silveira, until 2001. He was educated firstly at the independent Holmwood House School in Colchester, and then at the independent Oakham School in Rutland where he was caught smoking marijuana and expelled. He spent six months in Thailand at the age of thirteen with his stepfather. Upon returning home, he decided to change his life and began recording demos using his drum machine and some free studio time, and writing lyrics (he was taught how to play a real drum set by Jan van Mesdag). During this time he coined the name Jamiroquai for his potential new band, based upon the name of a Native American and Upstate New York tribe, the Iroquois, and “jam” from the word jamming, and also the distinctive Buffalo Man logo. His demos were soon spotted by the UK music label Acid Jazz with whom Kay signed a recording contract. Kay formed Jamiroquai with members Toby Smith (keyboards), Stuart Zender (bass), Nick Van Gelder (drums) and Wallis Buchanan (didgeridoo), together with guest appearances by Gavin Dodds (guitar), Maurizio Ravelico (percussion) and Johnny Thirkell (horns) amongst others, both on the band’s debut album and on their first tour. Excerpt: The Divine Comedy are a chamber pop band from Northern Ireland, fronted by Neil Hannon. Formed in 1989, Hannon has been the only constant member of the group, playing, in some instances, all of the non-orchestral instrumentation bar drums. To date, nine studio albums have been released under the Divine Comedy name. The group achieved their greatest commercial success in the years 1996-99, during which they had nine singles that made the UK Top 40, including the top ten hit National Express. The tenth Divine Comedy album, Bang Goes the Knighthood, is scheduled for release on 31 May 2010. Neil Hannon has been the only ever-present member of the band, being its founder in 1989 when he was joined by John McCullagh and Kevin Traynor. Their first album, the heavily R.E.M.-influenced and now-deleted Fanfare for the Comic Muse, enjoyed little success. A couple of equally unsuccessful EPs – Timewatch (1991); Europop (1992) – were to follow, with newly-recruited member John Allen handling lead vocals on some tracks. After the commercial failure of the Europop EP, this line-up soon fell apart. Hannon, however, was not deterred in his efforts and re-appeared in 1993 with Liberation. Featuring a fairly diverse musical outlook that goes from the tongue-in-cheek synth pop of ‘Europop’ (nearly unrecognisable from the previously-released version) to the classical stylings of ‘Timewatching’, it is also characterised by a plethora of literary references: ‘Bernice Bobs Her Hair’ recalls a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald; ‘Three Sisters’ draws upon a play by Anton Chekov; and ‘Lucy’ is essentially three William Wordsworth poems abridged to music. This led to a degree of critical acclaim, but commercial success still proved elusive. Indeed, it was only some min… More:

Though he is primarily a vocalist, he also accompanies himself on instruments including piano, guitar, and drums. Cullum was born in the hospital in Romford, East London. He was brought up in Hullavington, Wiltshire. His mother, Yvonne, is a secretary of Anglo-Burmese origin, whose family settled in North England after Burma’s independence; his father, John Cullum, worked in finance. His paternal grandfather was a British Army officer, while his paternal grandmother was a Jewish refugee from Prussia who sang in Berlin nightclubs. Cullum was educated at the independent fee-paying Grittleton House School and the sixth form at the state Sheldon School. He then went on to study English Literature and Film Studies at Reading University, where he graduated with First Class Honours. With only £480 to produce it, Cullum released his first album, Jamie Cullum TrioHeard it All Before, in 1999, of which 500 copies were made. Due to their rarity, original copies have sold for as much as £600 on eBay. The success of Heard it All Before resulted in Cullum being invited to appear on Geoff Gascoyne’s album Songs of the Summer. After graduating from Reading University, Cullum released his best-selling album, Pointless Nostalgic, which stirred interest from Michael Parkinson and Melvyn Bragg. Just after Cullum made his first television appearance, on Parkinson in April 2003, he signed a £1m contract for three albums with Universal, who beat Sony in a bidding war. Cullum’s third album, Twentysomething, released in October 2003, went platinum and became the #1 selling studio album by a jazz artist in the United Kingdom. Cullum ended 2003 as the UK’s bi… More:

Excerpt: Disco Volante is a 1995 album by the band Mr. Bungle. It is by far the most experimental of all their productions as it picks up inspirations from a wide variety of musical styles, including death metal, techno, 50s space age pop, Musique concrète and Italian avantgarde. Mike Patton also uses a great number of vocal effects boxes and samples throughout the album, most noticeably in songs like “Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz” and “The Bends”. The album also contains a hidden track (hidden in a double-groove on the US vinyl release; after ‘Carry Stress In The Jaw’ on the UK vinyl release) after “Carry Stress In The Jaw.” This track was originally recorded without bassist Trevor Dunn’s input or knowledge; although, shortly before its release, Dunn managed to find it and added a vocal track. Though never explicitly stated, it is believed (by Dunn) that the drums were played by McKinnon, and the bass by Patton. The songwriting credits in the album’s booklet include the section “Nothing – Words: Lengyel; Music: Heifetz”. This is not, as some people believe, the name and credits for the end section of “Merry Go Bye Bye” (the song preceding it in the list), but is a joke at the expense of Lengyel and Heifetz, who had no songwriting credits for material appearing on the album. “Carry Stress In The Jaw” is subtitled “Sleep: Part II” and “Phlegmatics” is “Sleep: Part III.” Part I is “Slowly Growing Deaf” from the self-titled album. All three songs were written by Trevor Dunn, who didn’t decide to make “Slowly Growing Deaf” part I until after the other two were written for Disco Volante. The three songs share themes dealing with body parts. This would be Lengyel’s final album with the band, leaving shortly after the tour due to “artistic differenc… More:

Excerpt: “Broken Wings” is a #1 hit song released as a 1985 single by the band Mr. Mister. The band’s first single from their 1985 Welcome to the Real World album, “Broken Wings” reached the number one position on the U.S. charts in December 1985, where it remained for two weeks. It was released as the band was just about to embark on a U.S. tour opening for Tina Turner. The song reached number four in the UK Singles Chart, the highest the group ever achieved in that country. The song was co-written with lyricist John Lang, who was inspired by a book called “Broken Wings” written by Khalil Gibran . The lyrics “Take these broken wings and learn to fly again” may be a reference to The Beatles’ song “Blackbird.” The song is a mix of synth, digitally delayed guitar, bass and drums. The song’s hissing intro was an effect created by the sound of crash cymbal played in reverse . There is a distinct guitar sound in this track thanks to Steve Farris’ innovation of the electric guitar, managing to extract a delay effect at an odd timing to create a contrast to the steadiness of the bass and beat. The outro to the song features Page singing very high and lengthy falsetto notes. A second generation Ford Thunderbird appears in the videoThe music video for “Broken Wings” was directed by Oley Sassone and filmed in black

Excerpt: Shed Seven are an English indie rock band from York and were one of the groups which contributed to the Britpop music scene that evolved during the 1990s, yet never received the degree of mainstream success achieved by bands such as Oasis and Blur. They formed in 1990 and originally comprised Rick Witter (vocals), Joe Johnson (guitar and keyboards, later replaced by Paul Banks), Tom Gladwin (bass) and Alan Leach (drums). They belonged to the post-Smiths wave of UK musicians such as The Sundays and Marion, with a sound relying heavily on complex guitar arpeggios often in a minor key, and wailing vocals. At the height of their popularity between 1994 and 1999 they had fifteen Top 40 singles and four Top 20 albums in the UK. The band officially broke up in 2003, but reformed for a greatest hits tour in July 2007. The band has continued to play shows around the UK periodically but has not released a new studio album. Shed Seven formed in 1990 from the ashes of Brockley Haven, a band featuring frontman Rick Witter, guitarist and songwriter Paul Banks, bassist Tom Gladwin, Magnus Thompson and John Leach, brother of Alan Leach. Both Witter and Banks had also previously played together in a band named ENAM, performing to German exchange students in Banks’s front room. The band’s name derived from a railway shed during a return trip to York; as they approached York railway station, they noticed a small shed on the sidings labelled “Shed 7″. Prior to signing a six-album deal with Polydor Records in October 1993, guitarist Joe Johnson left the line-up and was replaced by Paul Banks. The band twice entered the local Fibbers/Evening Press Battle Of The Bands competition, twice failing to win, whilst in September 1993, still unsigned, they were voted the … More:
