Lincolnton was born as a starting point for westward expansion in the days when America’s frontier was Western North Carolina and Tennessee. The first textile mill in the South was built in Lincolnton, and although the industry suffered early setbacks, by the late 19th century, mills dominated the local economy. Today, Lincolnton manages to maintain its quiet Southern small-town atmosphere while offering the opportunities of a bustling, thriving city. Lincolnton’s early history is recorded in deeds, will books, journals, and letters. From the 1940s through the 1970s, Clyde R. "Baby Ray" Cornwell (19121987) captured Lincolnton in images that showcase mill villages, civic organizations, parades, local government, and residents. No distinctions between race, gender, or socioeconomic background were seen through his lens. All of the photographs in Images of America: Lincolnton are from the Clyde R. "Baby Ray" Cornwell Collection, part of the permanent collection of the Lincoln County Museum of History. In 2005 the Lincoln County Historical Association celebrates its 50th anniversary. The Lincoln County Museum of History was organized and is maintained by the historical association for the collection, presentation, and promotion of the county’s rich historic heritage.

Gov’t Mule Legends Boone, NC 4.19.07 Legends, situated in the mountainous environs of Boone, NC was the local stable for tonight’s Mule. Warren began the show a cappella with Grinnin’ In Your Face followed by a rabid Bad Little Doggie. The intensity of the set rose like a phoenix with tremendous playing during Gameface->Mountain Jam->Gameface; a stunning Don’t Step On The Grass, Sam that rolled right into Mississippi Queen and a Sco-Mule for the record books. All of this culminated in the one-two punch of Banks Of The Deep End and Thorazine Shuffle to close the set. Picking up right where they left off, Lola Leave Your Light On was first out of the gate for round two and was followed by a version of Livin’ Lovin’ Maid that would make Jimmy Page envious. Luther Ingram’s If Loving You Is Wrong I Don’t Want To Be Right was tastefully tacked on the end of Endless Parade prior to Like Flies that slid into Drums. It got a bit purple after Drums when When Doves Cry and Beautifully Broken were seamlessly intertwined as was the follow-up of I’m A Ram and Love Me Do. Mule was the evening’s set closer and Reggae Soulshine rounded out the night in the encore slot. I wonder why they call it Legends? What’s the difference between FLAC and MP3? During the long farewell of her mother’s dying, Patricia Hampl revisits her midwestern girlhood.Daughter of a debonair Czech father, whose floral work gave him entree to St. Paul society, and a distrustful Irishwoman with an uncanny ability to tell a tale, Hampl remained, primarily and passionately, a daughter well into adulthood. She traces the arc of faithfulness and struggle that comes with that role–from the postwar years past the turbulent sixties. At the heart of The Florist’s Daughter is the humble passion of people who struggled out of the Depression into a better chance, not only for themselves but for the common good.Widely recognized as one of our most masterly memoirists, Patricia Hampl has written an extraordinary memoir that is her most intimate, yet most universal, work to date. This transporting work will resonate with readers of Francine du Plessix Gray’s Them: A Memoir of Parents and JeannetteWall’s The Glass Castle.

Sounds Festival – Manteo, NC 05.27.07

$14.95

Gov’t Mule Sounds Festival Manteo, NC 05.27.07 The summer sounds festival, situated just a crab cake’s throw from the water began with John The Revelator and a salty Thorazine Shuffle. The Gameface/Mountain Jam combo was beyond description as were the next two segue laden tunes. When Doves Cry/ Beautifully Broken and the I’m A Ram/ Love Me Do combos were better than the number two at Wendy’s; even with fries, because our combo has a Soulshine for dessert. Mr. High & Mighty led the way into an Endless Parade that displayed Warren’s innate ability to make a guitar do things you didn’t know were possible. Next up was a ferocious one-two of Lola Leave Your Light On-> Livin’ Lovin’ Maid-> Drums; perhaps the hardest rockin’ Drums heard to date, in fact. Brighter Days brought us back from Matt’s amazing solo and after a Lively Up Yourself, Mule closed out the set, but the night’s capper belonged to As Long As I Can See The Light. Between the crabcakes, the beachside venue and the Mule’s stellar performance, this is easily a favorite show. What’s the difference between FLAC and MP3? Click here to check it out. Ladies' Southern Florist

Ladies’ Southern Florist

$21.68

First Printed in 1860 on the eve of the Civil War, Ladies’ Southern Florist by Mary C. Rion was the first book to provide gardeners in the South with a comprehensive list of ornamentals — trees, shrubs, flowers, bulbs, and roses — ideally suited to the southern climate. This small but pivotal work is equally significant as the earliest garden book in the South written by a woman. Prior to its publication, southern gardeners had to turn to English garden books or guides geared to northern gardeners, which offered little in the way of advice on growing plants in a region characterized by mild winters, hot and humid summers, and periods of extended drought. This facsimile edition of Ladies’ Southern Florist not only offers a historical perspective of gardening but also serves as a wonderful resource at this time of growing interest in garden history, period gardens, and heirloom plants. While many of the 150 plants described by Rion had long been favorites, she also featured many newly introduced specimens that found instant favor with southern gardeners, including camellia (Camellia japonica), gardenia (Gardenia jasmi – noides), crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica), and a wide selection of roses. Whether enjoyed for its historic merit or employed as a guide for selecting traditional time-tested plants, Rion’s work celebrates the timeless joys, pleasures, and rewards of gardening in the South.
