Whether or not you are just beginning to learn to play the Drums, or have been playing for some time, the desire to get better is always going to be there.  Probably one of the most often sought after skill is to learn how to increase your playing speed. For beginners, the fundamentals of drum playing is more important.  But as you learn and time goes on - you will be focusing a lot more on efforts to increase your drumming speed.

One key to becoming a faster drummer, of course, is practice, practice, practice ALONG with repetition doing the most basic and simple drum motions.  These activities are critical for each and every drummer.  Be somewhat patient as it takes time to master the basics .  Eventually they become second nature - where it is automatic, without much thinking.  Tools, like a metronome or practice pad are useful to help you as you progressively improve your beats per minute.  Practicing the basics will also help develop your hand control, endurance, and rhythm.

Setting up the drum set effectively before playing is another very simple tip that generally goes unnoticed.  If your Drums are setup incorrectly, as an example, a bit too far from you or positioned too closely to each other or for your body, it could impact your ability to play and reduce your speed.  Setup a standard procedure to get everything ready before practicing or playing, that you would do each time.  That way, you will develop good habits and have a consistent way to get started every time. 

After practicing for a while, you will learn that drum sticks have different weights.  Many instructors and web-based drum lessons will advise you to practice some of your routines and basic strokes with heavier sticks from time to time.  This will help develop your wrists' strength and control.  But how does this aid your speed, you may ask?  By practicing with the heavier sticks your muscles will adapt to the weight so when you pick up your regular drum sticks you will notice the difference right away.  Playing the drums your regular sticks will become less difficult and more comfy simply because your hands adjust back.

Keep in mind it is also a good idea to take some time warming up.  Well conditioned muscles function far better, so before you practice, do some warm-up workouts with your hands.  Emphasize exercises for your writs and fingers - this will increase your strenght and flexibility - which all will impact your speed.   This really is particularly important if you like to play in the morning.  Your body is just waking up from being zonked out and you want to be sure you don't hurt your wrists.  However, no matter when you playor practice, some warm-up routines will be helpful to keep from having issues with your wrists.  Numerous Internet drum courses have some simple hand workouts and warm-ups that they advise.

Do not be put off by the use of phonetic dialect spelling. This is not being used here to belittle the speakers or cast them as ignorant. Rather, this book is scrupulously non-judgmental. This is simply how oral accounts were transcribed before there were portable tape recorders or camcorders.
